Phineas was not Brazilian. He was from New Hampshire. After recovering from his injury, however, he moved to Chile where he got a job driving horse wagons. He held that job for several years until he started developing epilepsy (probably as a sequela to his injury). His family had moved from the east to California by then, so he returned to them there and died a year or two afterwards.
