Thank you to all of you who took time to offer suggestions and help, it is much appreciated. I've actually learned quite a bit from your suggestions. I did follow through and contact the author, who welcomed the information quite cordially and promised he would contact his editor. He asked me to let him know of others who have had similar problems. Anyone wishing to contact me backchannel so that I can tell the author about your problems, please do. Alternatively, you can contact the author yourself. I'm amazed at how receptive textbook authors are. I guess I shouldn't be--many of you are text authors, and you're all a pretty nice bunch of people. :) And Deb, my students have been very supportive and helpful, although one suggested that he could send me a java program that could run through a bunch (a million or so) of random numbers to find the access codes that students in the class could use.
