  Hi

Recast as a probability problem .hat I am t

If hash brown choices are binary (yes/no), 20 options gives 2^20 = 1048576
and 2^21 = 2097152.

  So there must be some non-binary options? 2^19 X 3 = 524288 x 3 = 1572864,
Martin's posted amount.

Are there indeed 20 options, with one having three choices?

  Take care

I would argue that it's a true ratio scale. There are, according to the
official Waffle House menu, over 1,572,864 ways to order hash browns. The true
zero point would be if the Waffle House were closed due to weather.

Now is this ordinal or interval scaling?

Another odd metric: I introduced my class yesterday to Oliver Smoot
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoot) who used his body to measure the Harvard
Bridge. It's my understanding that after he tired, his brothers dragged his
body for each successive smoot. The Smoot markers turned out to be useful. From
Wikipedia:

The markings have become well accepted by the public, to the degree that
during the bridge renovations that occurred in the 1980s, the Cambridge Police
department requested that the markings be maintained, since they had become
useful for identifying the location of accidents on the bridge.[12] The
renovators went one better, by scoring the concrete surface of the sidewalk on
the bridge at 5 foot 7 inch intervals, instead of the conventional six feet.[13]
