There is a research study in the journal "Cell Systems" that examines
swabs of "stuff" taken from the surface of various areas in NYC and
you'll never guess what they found.

Really.

Okay, they "think" they found bubonic plague. And anthrax. The
NY Times has an article on the research as well as reactions from
the NYC health department; see:
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/07/nyregion/bubonic-plague-in-the-subway-system-dont-worry-about-it.html?_r=0

The research article is available here (lots of colorful graphics):

It is unlikely that anyone would actually get sick from the bubonic
plague specimens (it's been 100 years since anyone got it on the
subway; the subway opened in 1904) or anthrax. As bad as the
bubonic plague and anthrax are, as a native New Yorker, I have
the feeling that there are worse things you can catch on the
subway. ;-)

P.S. This kinda makes the whole manspreading kerfuffle not
so important, eh? ;-)
