Hi I can't help but note that U Warwick (the home school for this paper) is doing its part to make the lives of highly educated people (i.e., PhDs) more miserable. They have created an entity independent of the university to contract out part-time teaching, presumably to make it even easier to pay starvation wages, avoid benefits, block unionization, and generally fire people. Here's one piece on it:

Guess Again... A study in the "British Journal of Psychiatry" (BJP) is claiming that people with higher levels of education do not have a better level of mental well-being than people with low levels of education (so much for you Ph.D.s ;-). This research is making its way into the mass media but the couple of outlets that I viewed appeared to rely heavily on the press release by the university of researchers; the press release can be read here: http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/newsandevents/pressreleases/education_may_not/ One source that relies on this release if the EurekAlert website of the AAAS; see: http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2015-03/uow-emn032515.php Another is the Science Daily website: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/03/150325131620.htm Here's a link to the abstract on PubMed: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25792696 One can link to the BJP website in the upper right corner of the screen and get a copy of the article (if your institution has a subscription). I'm sure that there will be a variety of interpretations of the results and I think a closer reading of the results is needed (which I will do later) but I think I can hear the cranks now: "If you're so smart, why aren't you happier!" ;-) -Mike Palij New York University [email protected] --- You are currently subscribed to tips as: [email protected].
