I tend to think that statements that the patterns were unlikely to occur by
chance to be questionable because we don't expect participants to respond
in a chance fashion.  The, "six participants wrote “SURGERY” for the stem
“SUPP__”, seems disturbing, but does it mean intentional misconduct?
Perhaps other words in the list or something in the instructions primed
them for a particular type of error.  Sometimes students make really weird
errors when handling data, but they also could feel pressured and
manipulate data to please the professor or some such thing.  It might be
helpful if the authors explained why they decided to retract the 3rd study.
