Ha!! The recent incident involving SJU students notwithstanding,

I have a couple of students who sport Trump stickers in their laptops
and know
a few others who openly support Trump. Then, again, I teach in the
Staten
Island campus, a borough that tends to vote republican.
I believe that of the 5 boroughs that make up NYC, Staten Island
(they've stopped calling it the borough of Richmond, right?) has
the largest number of registered Republicans -- being a registered
Republican/Democrat/etc is important in NYC because we
hold closed primaries, meaning that only registered Republicans
can vote for Republican candidates and so on (as a lifelong
independent I have been unable to vote in a primary but do
vote regularly in the elections).
The real issue as I see it with Trump involves critical thinking:
what are the policies, principles, and positions he holds and
how well are they supported by the facts and reason. Given
that most "real" conservatives don't view Trump as being
either a conservative or a Republican as well as his changing
of positions on what seems like an hourly basis (e.g., his
position on abortion and whether women should be penalized
for it), it is hard to see what the intellectual argument
would be in support of a Trump candidacy. This seems to be
a situation where "Gut Feeling" wins out over "critical thinking"
(consider cognitive psychologist's Gerd Gigerenzer's book
on "Gut Feelings" which attempts to provide a more serious
portrayal of the work presented in Malcolm Gladwell's "Blink"; see:
http://www.amazon.com/Gut-Feelings-Intelligence-Gerd-Gigerenzer/dp/0143113763/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1459790641&sr=8-3&keywords=gigerenzer
)
I wonder what Gigerenzer thinks of Trump and his supporters.
That being said, it is also telling that when Republican John
Kasich had his townhall meeting in NYC which was broadcast
on MSNBC, he chose a school in Howard Beach, Queens
where some of the attendees who were interviewed before
the meeting self-identified as Trump supporter -- I'll leave it
to the interested reader to discovery how Howard Beach
made the national news a couple of decades ago.
On a side note, in the early 1970s I knew a female college
classmate who lived on Staten Island and her father dealt
in real estate there. Somehow he had gotten control over
the Alice Austin house which at that time had was unoccupied
though my classmate and her friends had access to it. So,
I spent some time there during a couple of summers, getting
to know some Staten Islanders and the history of the Alice
Austen house. The first part of it was built in late 1600s and
additions were made subsequently. It sits above the entrance
to New York Harbor with the Verrazano Narrows bridge to
the south, Brooklyn straight across, and Manhattan to the north --
it has a grand view. In the decades afterwards, a local historical
society took it over and made it into a museum, not only
because of its long history but also because Alice Austen was
a photographer who was noted for her work. For more info,

An interesting little article at the Gothamist website about some

It is unclear whether the students presented in the article are
in the college of Arts & Sciences or the Stern School of
Business but I think neither would be eager to claim them.
