TiVo only records the live show on the channel that it is tuned to. When you say you "switched to a live show" do you mean you just stopped watching the recorded show and switched to live TV but didn't have to change the channel? If that's the case, TiVo should have had the last 30 minutes recorded. However, if you then changed channels, even just by accident, and then went back to the original channel, that might be the problem. The buffer gets erased every time you change channels. You can avoid this "fragility" by simply hitting the record button, but otherwise as soon as you switch, you've lost up to 30 minutes of previous recording...
