I recently got the Comcast version of Tivo. It is a Motorola box that receives
HD channels in addition to the other digital channels. It can record 2
programs at the same time or you can watch one and record another. I put it on
my HDTV where I previously had my Pioneer 810 H Tivo/DVD box. The Pioneer is
currently in for repair. When I get it back I will hook it up to the same TV
and split the cable signal with one line going into the Motorola box and the
other going into the Pioneer.

Or if she has Comcast cable - didn't Comcast announce a partnership with
TiVo? (not sure how far out that would be though).

Right only one tuner, but if you're recording something, you CAN'T watch
another live channel through the TiVo; only a pre-recorded show. You'd have
to split the cable between the TiVo and TV in order to watch and record
  different channels.
