One thing I've discovered when configuring and re-configuring
my TiVo is that much patience is needed. I bought a Humax
300 hour machine a few weeks ago. I was in the process of
going from Dish network to the local phone company's DSL
Video service so I first set it up for Dishnet. Seemed to
work fine, even worked on the DSL broadband for program
updates and such.

Then I had the phone company's DSL Video installed and
attemped to switch program guides. Holy cow! That turned
into a nightmare! It stopped talking to the TiVo servers
over the broadband connection. When I tried changing the
channel guide to the new service it seemed to lock up
at the "preparing" stage in the phone call procedure.
I tried pulling the power plug and re-booting several times.
Eventually it came up with a "yellow screen of death"
and said it had detected a serious problem and was trying
to correct it. It said this would take 3 hours! I think
it was re-building its operating system from scratch.

Finally it finished rebuilding itself and I re-configured
it from the beginning. Now all is well and it's stable.

The point of this long winded thing is to say that we
should be patient with a TiVo when configuring. I think
it was not actually locked up at the dial-in "preparing"
stage. After the total rebuilding job I just let it
prepare all it wanted. After something like 10 minutes
it finally dialed out and completed the setup
normally. There are several points in the setup
procedure that it is "preparing" or "organizing".
This takes so long that we're temped to think it's
locked up and so we pull the power plug and try to
reset. Don't do it! Just go get a cup of coffee and
let it play. It might take it a half hour or more to
finish up. Pulling the power at this point just
screws it up. The TiVo does it's normal job very
well, but some of the configuration can take a
rediculous amount of time. After it downloads a
new channel lineup for example; it takes 4-8 hours
to "index". Guess we just have to leave it alone
until it's ready to play.

Hope this is of some help. Does this jive with
your experiences with it?

Dan in Minnesota.
