I'm familiar with the DirecTiVos, but I haven't really kept up on the capabilities of the standalone series 1, 2, and 3.
Which series will allow me to record from the video input (S-video or composite) without needing TiVo service or a program guide? The plan is to record gymnasts using a camcorder feeding into the TiVo, and be able to use the 30-minute buffer so they can watch their routines shortly afterwards (although we may also want to make recordings from the camcorder). This is an on-the-cheap project, so I was thinking a used TiVo would be a good choice, but I need to make sure it will work without service. Would that mean it has to be series 1? Any recommendations on the software version that I should make sure is on a used unit before buying it (since I won't be connecting it to the phone/web for updates)? Thanks ... Mike
