Once upon a time David shaped the electrons to say... > Can I get the necessary codecs elsewhere?
To work with TiVo Desktop? No. The only way to enable the feature in TiVo Desktop is to buy the key from TiVo. Even if you had all the video codecs on the system, the fuctionality in the desktop is locked without the key. (TiVo did this to avoid legal issues - most codecs, including all MPEG codecs, are covered by patents. The 'free' codecs out there are technically illegal. If they openly allowed people to enable the desktop with free codecs, they could catch heat for encouraging the violation. TiVo licensed the required software and bundle it with Plus, enabled with the key.) But you can use any program that can do transcoding to convert other formats into TiVo-compatible MPEG-2 manually, and any MPEG-2 files in the desktop's video directory can be uploaded. There are a lot of programs that will convert formats. -MZ -- <URL:mailto:megazoneatmegazone.org> Gweep, Discordian, Author, Engineer, me.
