You could also set up a wireless router and create a standard wireless
network inside your house which would allow you the multi-room viewing as
MZ said and let you pull programming from a Tivo to a PC. And if your PCs
are networked you can do the usual networking things: file sharing,
printer sharing, etc.

Definitely. It is also possible to have a home network and use a modem as
your access to the world. Years ago, before I got DSL/cable/whatever, I
had a PC set up with a modem that would dial out any time any of my
computers tried to use the network, making it look almost like an
always-on network, ala broadband. However, it was still modem-slow.
Back in the day you needed special software to make this happen, but you
could probably do it with Windows XP's internet connection sharing. If
you want to do this and you're not a windows guru I would find your
nearest windows person and offer a beer-for-help scheme. It just might
work.
