Thank you very much. It was so simple to fix that I'm embarrassed I didn't know about the "aspect" button. I must have pressed it by accident and didn't know it.

Thanks. It sounds like you have a Series3 or TiVo HD and you're watching 4:3 content on a 16:9 display. Use the 'Aspect' button on your remote to change modes. What you have now is 'Panel', which preserves the aspect ratio. You can change the bars to black in the menus too.
