When you say '2 minutes of protection or want the unit to run for 30
minutes' , this kind of confused me because if you are talking about the
ups'es, aren't they 'on' and working all the time as long as the appliance
they are protecting is plugged into them? Otherwise they would be useless,
so I am not sure what you are meaning.

The power outages can be just moments or days. It is as random as a
thunderstorm so there is no real pattern. When they are longer I call my
ISP. The shorter ones are just long enough that I have to reset all my
clocks and answering machine :-).

Size the units for your load, buy what you need. Makes a big difference if
you want 2 minutes of protection, or want the unit to run for 30 minutes.
All depends on the nature of the power outages you experience.

My UPS came with a USB cable, which would alert the computer to shut down
automatically, even if you weren't there at the moment. I have a UPS built
into my computer at work, very slick. Until you realize it's simply a
laptop :-)
