This works for me, change configure.in:

{PACKAGE}")
else
AC_DEFINE_UNQUOTED(PACKAGE_DATA_DIR, "${prefix}/share/${PACKAGE}")
fi
You should also set datarootdir in src/Makefile.in:
datarootdir = @datarootdir@
