There are several issues with these arguments: 1. While both X25519 and NSA Suite B date back to 2005, the NSA was at the time probably the world's largest employer of mathematicians with an estimated five-digit workforce and a multi-billion dollar budget, whereas Bernstein was working as an individual researcher. Developing Curve25519, ChaCha20, and Poly1305 single-handedly is a remarkable achievement. As early as 2005, Bernstein clearly anticipated a future security level of 256 bits of security: "I predict that future cryptographers will settle on 256-bit keys as providing a comfortable security level. They will regard 80-bit keys as a silly historical mistake, and 128-bit keys as uncomfortably risky." [1] Indeed, as Bernstein predicted, in 2015 the NSA deprecated the 128-bit security level. 2. The NSA engages in doublespeak. It has publicly praised 128 and 192 bits of security and still praises 192 bits of security, while internally clearly relying on 256 bits of security. By contrast, Bernstein has far more limited resources. I hope that Bernstein will develop algorithms that remain resistant to quantum computers while providing 256‑bit security. 3. By establishing these technical standards, the NSA encourages companies to deploy degraded (weakened) encryption, even though this is generally unnecessary and undesirable from the end user's perspective. On typical consumer devices, any of these ECC curves can be used without any noticeable performance difference. Curve P-521 can even be implemented on standard smart cards. Nevertheless, the RFC in question, authored by an NSA employee, permits only curve P-384 (192 bits of security). For example, the widely used product YubiKey 5 NFC supports only "P-256, P-384" [2] (128 and 192 bits of security), even though P-521 (256 bits of security) could also have been implemented without difficulty. 4. Private data should remain secure for three or four decades, or even longer. As Bernstein predicted, the NSA deprecated the 128-bit security level more than a decade ago. In this respect, both Bernstein's assessment and the NSA's current guidance support my argument. Please refrain from using derogatory, personal, or unprofessional language such as "sigh…", as it is inconsistent with the IETF's standards of professional conduct.
