I've found you'll often have to do this on platforms like Solaris,
IRIX, and Tru64, but not for the more popular ones like Linux and
*BSD.

The Python configuration/build process is kind of screwy if you ask
me.  I'm really not sure why they ditched the autoconf system (which
worked fine) in favor of something homegrown.
