This seems to be a Sendmail-ism, I've seen similar reports before. You
could investigate whether there is any way Sendmail can be configured
to not do this.
A workaround is to not use direct SMTP when sending mail. Do this by
adding the following to your ~/.tmda/config or /etc/tmdarc:
OUTGOINGMAIL = "sendmail"
