Post-1.0, I'd like to think about this (among many other things), from an architectural/design perspective. For now, I think the patch, assuming it works for Lloyd and anyone else who tries it, is simple and a workable solution. I just need to explore how to add the additional information to the log that the message went to standard out rather than being delivered to a more permanent destination. As far as passing through non-acceptable messages, both mail filters allow you to catch non-zero return codes from filters and continue processing, so the way the patch works right now is uncomplicated and doesn't block any desired behavior in the mail filters.
