Post-1.0, I'd like to think about this (among many other things), from
an architectural/design perspective.  For now, I think the patch,
assuming it works for Lloyd and anyone else who tries it, is simple
and a workable solution.  I just need to explore how to add the
additional information to the log that the message went to standard
out rather than being delivered to a more permanent destination.

As far as passing through non-acceptable messages, both mail filters
allow you to catch non-zero return codes from filters and continue
processing, so the way the patch works right now is uncomplicated and
doesn't block any desired behavior in the mail filters.
