I think for Sendmail, one could create a mailer definition in the *.cf -- from there, these types of variables are available (in different forms like $j , etc), and then call the tmda as a delivery agent. It's probably a bit above my capability right now, which is why I posted here (thinking someone may have done it).
The other solution, perhaps, is for sendmail users to use procmail as their local delivery agent. I'll have to look into that as well.
