You might give Postfix another chance.  If you browse the
postfix-users mailing list, you'll see lots of examples of the author
integrating both suggestions as well as code/documentation
contributions.  Wietse might have just been in a bad mood that day.
In general, he tends to have a rather curt and clinical way of
communicating that you might have been misinterpreted as disinterest.

Exim would be another MTA to try.  It's configuration was a bit too
complex for my tastes, but like Postfix it's widely-used, actively
developed, opensource, and works with TMDA.  It's also developed in
the UK in case you want to support your homeland.  :-)
