In general though, what is the problem you are trying to solve here? I'm not quite clear on what it is given your example above.
The problem I was trying to solve was non-existent. I wanted to know how I could get access to certain parts of the message in the action part of the rule.
I was thinking of the tmda pipe as the last field of a cron job -- just a task to perform. Now that I realize that the pipe actually receives the contents of the email and performs a task *that accepts the contents as input*, it all makes much more sense to me.
