I agree. But in the interim, while I'm waiting who-knows-how-long for a
maildrop patch, this hack could tide me over.
Also, which do you think would be better for TMDA in this case where
there is no SENDER environment variable? ... that I set SENDER to the
empty string, or that I set it to <>? I can do it either way.

Will do. It might take a few days before I have the time to fully test
