Okay, a reading of the FAQ solved this issue for me.
For those of you who are interested, here is what I
had to do:

  1. Create a ~vpopmail/.tmda/tofmipd file (I left it
empty, since I am doing SMTP authentication, based on
their email address)
  2. As per the FAQ, I ran the following command as
root:

su -l vpopmail -c '/usr/bin/tmda-ofmipd -d -f -R pop3
-S /usr/share/doc/tmda-1.0/contrib/vpopmail-vdir.sh'

(Note: the location of 'vpopmail-vdir.sh' may differ
on your system)

Once I had that running, my messages went through
without a problem, and were getting tagged properly.
Now I can run it without the '-d' and '-f' options,
and also add it to a startup script :-)

HTH someone else...
