I do not think it is a bug, it is a feature (in vpopmail).
I have been using TMDA for some time with about 50% of my users with "." in the username.
No bugs. Also check the list archives because I did start a cool thread about "." in user names with tmda-cgi

If you have a "." in a user name then things change a bit with qmail/vpopmail.

If you follow the instructions on TMDAs site then things may be a bit messed up.
I read the thread but did not see how you named your .username file.
For example, if I have [EMAIL PROTECTED] the .qmail file would actually have to appear like this...
.qmail-bob:user (Note the ":" instead of the ".").
Vpopmail will follow only one "." so you must use ":".
This is the behavior of qmail. The same goes with aliases or whatever.

So, when you create a file called .qmail-bob.user then I believe the way qmail looks at it (well, vpopmail) is that the file is actually for bob, not bob.user.
Your .qmail file is completely ignored because of the dot.
This is documented on the qmail home page.

My suggestion, compile vpopmail with the "-" extensions and place a plane old .qmail file in the users directory.
(The "-" extensions allow vpopmail to follow the dynamic addresses TMDA makes).

Or just name your .qmail file this...
.qmail-user:name

The wierd part is, that nothing at all is logged in the logfile - which
somehow indicates, that tmda never is called - but the mail is delivered
directly to the user's Maildir folder ??

Bug found - somehow the system doesn't like the '.' to be present in the
username ...

Then report the bug to whatever package (qmail, vpopmail, etc) is responsible. If TMDA is not even being invoked as you indicate above, it's not a TMDA bug.
