When you say "TMDA default install", are you referring to the TMDA-CGI web-based management tool?

I don't know too much about installing users with that tool - I only have 2 user accounts, so I install(ed) the users manually!

That said, I believe that TMDA-CGI has templates for the .qmail (and other) files that you need to edit to be appropriate for your system when you install TMDA-CGI.

Regarding the installation using the incorrect home directory, I suspect you need to change something in the way you setup TMDA-CGI to know about your system's virtual users - TMDA-CGI has a number of plugins for different virtual users systems and you need to select the correct one at compile time, plus it does/can rely on an external script to query some information, which I believe includes the home directory location.
