I've just checked in what I've been working on in this area. I think it is immediately usable, so feel free to try it out.
If you use customized templates, see UPGRADE for a couple changes you need to make to them. If you aren't interested in the I18N stuff (i.e, only use US-ASCII in your templates), nothing else needs to be changed. There isn't any documentation for the I18N stuff yet, other than what you've read on this list recently. If you want to try it out and have questions, feel free to ask until the documentation is up.
