Well, it works with /usr/sbin/sendmail.  I'm really not sure why it
didn't work with your script.

You might consider adding Habeas SWE headers to your challenges then.
Spamassasin and quite a few other packages already recognize them.
TMDA FAQ 7.3 discusses how to do this with TMDA.

This is something that should be addressed in your MUA.  Many MUAs
"background" the sending process allowing you to do other work while
the send is taking place.  The client that comes with Mac OS X does
this for example.  I just changed my TMDA outgoing filter to add 28
bit hashcash tokens and tried sending some mail with Mail.app.  The
"send" window exits immediately allowing me to read mail, and even
send additonal messages.  A small progress icon shows me the send is
not complete, but I don't have to sit there waiting for it.

This is configurable in Postfix via the `command_time_limit'
parameter.
