I have never opened my eyes in the big magnet and sometimes I am in there for a very long time. But its my kind of denial.  I instead imagine it to be like a Sistine chapel and imagine huge paintings on the ceiling.

I also tend to take along a few ideas to let my imagination run on.  Like visiting the Lake Superior shore and walking with my family and a new  puppy.  Or walking down a long shady forest road.  If you really try you can visualize all sorts of colorful places over the hum and drum of the machine.  I am also amused by the "queek queek" and "dong dong dung dung" of the machine.  Ya gotta wonder what its really doing in there.  I mean are there little guys with hammers or is this really the miracle device we think it is??

Sandy who is gearing up for a long stint in the machine next week.

I too found the white washcloth over my eyes and nose (not the nostrils) was a great help.  However, I had them wet the cloth with cold water and wring it out.  Really really helped me too. This was for the MRI.  For the Spinal Tap, I only had the one and that was when I first went in hospital.  I was numb in that area due to the TM so didn't feel anything there.

Hi Sharon,

I'm claustrophobic too, so naturally dreaded the thought of an MRI.  Then, last year whenever I was back in the hospital, one of the nurses told me that if I put a dry white washcloth over my eyes, that it would help with the claustrophobic feelings.  Though I did't think it would help, I was very surprised to find that it actually worked!   Sharon, I actually ended up going to sleep in there and was shocked whenever they woke me up and I discoverd that it was all over.  Whenever I think back to all of my earlier MRI shenanigans....*Nurse, pull me out!  Help!  Get me outta here, I can't take it!*......I'm sooooooo mebarrassed.

My last lumbar puncture wasn't done under the floroscope.  Maybe that's why they allowed me to be bent.

Grace
