If you are able to move your legs, I find that pumping the leg up and down
at the knee, as well as at the ankle helps a great deal. This is in addition
to elevating your legs whenever possible. If you cannot do this for yourself
and have somebody able to do it for you, it really helps to get the blood
flowing and fluid moving upward. It works so much faster if you can do this
in
conjunction with the elevation.

I've had 2 DVT's in my left leg, and since I regained some movement, I've
always moved my legs and feet to try to avoid further clots. This in addition
to a lifelong sentence of Coumadin. When traveling or relaxing, I have to
remind myself to move them.

p.s. Plus, once you've been paralyzed, it feels good to be able to move
your feet and legs again, and I also call it "therapy". Heck, any movement is
therapy.
