I change my Foley [indwelling catheter] every two weeks. Actually, we
change it; Betty fills the balloon for me. Recovering from abdominal
surgery, I recently had a visiting nurse change it; never again; we
are more skilled.
I have learned that the key to a graceful cathing is a well
lubricated cath. I cut off the package at the tip end and insert
about two or three cc's of KY jelly into the inner package. I then
distribute this the length of the cath. That ensures an easy insertion.
I do this under clean but not steriile conditions. I start with hand
washing.I bathe the entry area and my left hand with Betadine. And I
handle the cath through the inner wrapper. I have not had an UTI for
years.
