I have released a tmux 2.9 release candidate:

As always please test and report any issues on GitHub, here or to me
directly. Feature requests for the following or later releases are also
welcome.
This release will feature a few large changes, most notably to how the
status line is constructed and drawn and to how window sizes are
calculated. So I am particularly interested in testing from those with a
complex or unusual status line configuration.
