I don't change any of the key bindings in my config :-). Well, except the prefix key.
We could change some of the more obscure key bindings, but for ones like this there would need to be an exceptionally good reason. These are no better anyway - would | or \ be a vertical split because it matches the orientation of the panes or would it be horizontal because it matches the border line? There is no point in being more obvious to half of users if it is less obvious to the other half. h and v would make more sense perhaps. But nobody can even agree which way is horizontal and which vertical. And loads of people bind hjkl to move around panes anyway.
