Depending on what you've changed, you might not need to reset the fg/bg options, but try the following: setw -g window-status-activity-attr none setw -g window-status-activity-fg default setw -g window-status-activity-bg default A "format" as you call it will most likely be possible when I finish writing tmux's hook-support.
