The simplest way to do something like that is to dedicate one pane of a
window to messages - open an editor session and let the messages scroll.
Call it the "Main" window, and require folks to jump over there on a
regular basis and see if anything is "happening".
Other than that, email or IM would probably be the best solution over
hacking into tmux for such a specialized feature.
