It's used as a method of identification. Hardware terminals would have a
way to set a string that would be sent as if the user typed it on the
keyboard in response to an ENQ from the server. For example, it could be
set to the building/room/terminal number to identify to the server where
the terminal was connecting from.
Xterm has an option for this called answerbackString which defaults to an
empty string and is configurable.
