This is the Server Session State design pattern discussed in
"Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture" by Martin Fowler.

This B+Tree looks like it should be excellent for the Server Session
State map:

Yes for some applications it is fine to have sss declared as a class or
struct in a session variable (instead of the pointer).  Then it becomes
the Client Session State pattern also described in the above book (it is
an excellent book).
