let me give you a short comment first. I will think about it more thoroughly 
later.

As far as I see it is actually a bug in gcc failing to catch a exception of a 
certain type. I think, that the gcc guys did this by design to gain some 
performance. They match types by comparing the vtable.

I will try to create a simple example, to demonstrate the actual problem.
