Sorry, may be I missed something from this thread. I do not really think that
'rsync' will help in setting 2 servers online (especially if those servers
are far from each other). I think original question was about such setup...

NFS as solution for internal networks also does not work here...
Because it is very old code and have (until now) many security
holes...

So for my personal purposes (hot backup, but second server is not active in
normal state) 'rsync' is OK. For a server where there are need of simultaneous
access NFS will be Ok if it is under firewall in local network. And
if there are need to run 2 replicated servers in different places
of network: I do not see any easy implemented possible way.
Regarding security, if I use NFS I'll use it on FreeBSD, not LInux. Also, all NFS traffic will not go over a public network interface. Rather, each machine will have a second NIC that will be plugged into a separate switch for just the private network (NFS traffic). But this is of course assuming that the machines are all local.

Another option would be to use Coda. I have never used it, but it's certainly worth looking into.

May be somebody have ideas? Sorry if I missed point, I have to look
at 'toaster' archive may be...
Incidentally, there has been a searchable archive available that I just added a link to on www.shupp.org:
