I know I'm suppose to have a dns server installed on the mail server but
have not gotten that far yet.. Is it possible the SMTP port is being
blocked by the cabel company as every thing is going thru them.
 

Well, can you get to ANY external host at port 25?  That will answer 
your question.  I'm seeing a LOT of ISPs blocking outbound 25 now, so 
that very will could explain it.
