My five- year- old daughter, Kavya Srivarsha, is suffering from the genetic
disorder Thalassemia Major that is characterized by red blood cell
(hemoglobin) production abnormalities. To lead a normal life she got regular
blood transfusion as temporary supply of red blood cells which unfortunately is
also a source of iron. She got more than 52 times blood transfusion till date.
Iron overload typically results in the patient's early death from organ
failure. According to the doctors of Christian Medical College, Vellore it is
absolutely necessary to do a bone marrow transplantation (BMT) within three
months. Fortunately, the HLA of my two- year- old son, Yashendra Satyavardhan,
had matched for BMT as identical donor. The cost of BMT is generally around Rs
6-8 lakh for autologous and 10-12 lakh for allogeneic transplant. The best
treatment for Varsha is allogeneic transplant total cost of such a BMT
operation varies from Rs. 8, 00,000/- to 10, 00,000/ -. However, me being
a self-employed & and wife a school teacher it is impossible for both of us to
arrange such a huge amount of money.
