It would be great if you could help improve the 
scalability - it's a difficult task, and we need 
all the help we can get :-)

If tomcat shuts down with 150 threads I would suspect
it's a JVM problem - I did tests up to 200 threads.
It is slow - but that's a different issue ( 3.3 will be
faster ). 

Could you try to "debug" the problem - for example,
try with a different VM. What do you mean by "shutdown" ? 
Do you get a core dump ? Any report on the command line ?
Is it hunged ?
