I'm not sure if you caught Bill's reply, but apparently there was a similar bug reported and fixed. Can you try the CVS version (I have the version from 05/01/2002), which seems to be fine (at least it works for me).
Jikes is not the default compiler. You have to configure it (and obviously install it via RPM or from source). If you don't, javac (which is part of JDK) will be used.
