I suggest to fix the sample application code and add instructions on how to configure XA-capable Tyrex DataSources in server.xml. It does work - so it's a shame that how to enable it is so hard to find out. Furthermore, a clarification on Tyrex releases would help. Tomcat 4.0.4 includes Tyrex 0.9.7 which cannot be replaced with Tyrex 1.0 because of 0.9.7- specific code in org.apache.naming.factory.TyrexDataSourceFactory.
