That is the biggest difference the current user base is experiencing today. I've been on three commercial projects where mod_jk2 has been dropped and replaced with mod_proxy, (and not on my recommendation). That alone speaks for itself. If the successor of jk2 can be as easy to configure and setup with apache, then go for it. Otherwise I humble suggestion would be to start looking that direction.
