I think that the next step should be to try to find "why" instead writting a new modules. May be a quick hacked mod_proxy_ajp to replace mod_proxy_http is the first step.
Note that I am a bit reluctant to start a new module because I already had lost a lot of time in mod_webapp ;-(
A lot of people lost time on various connectors, so you're not alone ;) (the list includes me with my old HTTP connector in Tomcat 4.0)
