Check that your webapp isn't marked "distributable" as http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-5.5-doc/catalina/docs/api/org/apache/catalina/session/package-summary.html says: "distributable - Has the web application we are associated with been marked as "distributable"? If it has, attempts to add or replace a session attribute object that does not implement the java.io.Serializable interface will be rejected."
