Yes you can run them on different machines and connect them via ajp
check out the docs about mod_jk.

We are running tomcat 3.2 with Apache 3.1.12 on a Linux box (Kernel
2.2.16-SMP)
(more exactly: 3.2beta5 as the final does not work for our config)
