I think I discovered the problem: the data type of the column in MYSQL is
"text". The getObject() method returns the object address? Id? When it
doesn't recognize the data type. All other data types (char, varchar, etc.)
return proper values.

This blew me away because it worked in tomcat 3.1 with the older version of
the JSDK (I had it installed on another server), so this seems to be a
problem? Feature? Introduced with 1.3.
